The Homeschool Planner I Keep Coming Back To

Ah! We’re heading into another homeschool year with The Well Ordered Homeschool Planner! I’ve used it the last two years and it’s so good. I love the design this year! Be sure to grab the discount code below.

A few things I do when I plan in our homeschool…

  • I always aim to have a prayer in my heart and try to be very mindful of each child. What do they need? What will spark a love of learning? What resources or experiences will help them become what God sees in them?

  • I think of each child individually, but I also consider what our family needs as a whole.

  • I love to gather lots of ideas. I make ever-evolving lists of curriculum, books, field trips, hands-on projects, read-alouds, outside classes, service opportunities, and anything else that may enrich our learning.

  • I include my kids as much as possible. I ask questions, listen to their interests, and pay attention to what they’re naturally drawn to.

  • If they’re unsure what they want to study I like to show examples or videos and give a variety of ideas for inspiration. We keep exploring until I see that spark in their eyes.

  • I also keep in mind what materials I work best with. And recognize that what lights my fire often lights theirs and sometimes what lights their fire rekindles mine.

  • With all my lists, the process of elimination helps me narrow our focus. I compare options, pray for discernment, and prioritize what feels right for this season. If we’re considering outsourcing classes, we always try to trial them first. When it’s appropriate I sit in to observe and ask: will this be worth our time and money?

  • When I look at long-term planning, I think in a funnel: Year → Month → Week → Day Because if I know where we’re headed planning each step becomes much easier.

  • When I’ve narrowed in on our priorities I start gathering curriculum, books, and supplies. This is a really fun part.

  • Sometimes these things are a perfect fit… and sometimes they’re not. Sometimes I’m really confident I’m hearing what God wants us to do. Other times I realize I’ve leaned more into what I wanted. And sometimes He leads us in a direction that takes us somewhere completely different than I expected. I’ve learned none of these experiences are ever a waste though. There’s ALWAYS something to learn and refine.

Just remember homeschooling will never be a one time plan. It’s an ongoing rhythm of prayer, observation, learning, adjusting, and having enough faith in the Lord to guide you to the next step.
